SEATTLE — As an investment banker advising elite corporate clients in the 1990s, Jeff Seely drove the same Saab sedan for 13 years.

His motivation: to kick aside some extra cash for retirement. That experience proved valuable when Seely was offered the chance to jump from the finance arena to steer a fledgling dot-com in 1998.
